Sports versions of well-known models like the Pulsar, Lucino, and Sunny were equipped with the 1.6-liter Nissan SR16VE engine, also known as SR16, which was assembled at a plant in Japan between 1997 and 2000. For Pulsar 1997–1998, Autech offered an N1 version in addition to the standard modification.

Internal combustion engines SR18DE, SR20DE, SR20DET, SR20VE, and SR20VET are also members of the SR family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Nissan Lucino B14 in 1997 – 1999;
- Nissan Pulsar N15 in 1997 – 2000;
- Nissan Sunny 5 (B15) in 1998 – 2000.

Disadvantages of the SR16VE engine
It is strongly advised that owners of this unit keep an eye on the fuel’s quality;
A complex phase control system can be quickly rendered inoperable by cheap oils;
Examine the mass air flow sensor or idle speed control first when the speed is floating;
The oil pressure sensor and the crankshaft oil seal are typically the sources of leaks;
The timing chain frequently stretches and begins to rattle after 200 thousand kilometers.
