Engine BMW M62B44

A new, modified M62 series took the place of the M60 engines in 1996, while the upgraded M62B44 engine took the place of the M60B40. The 4.4-liter power unit’s predecessor, the M60B40, served as the model. Its cylinder block was modified to accommodate a larger cylinder diameter; the sleeves were originally made of nikasil, but since 1998, alusil has taken its place.

The connecting rods are still the old M60, the pistons are new and have a diameter of 92 mm, and the crankshaft is a new steel long-stroke with six counterweights.

The M62B44 camshafts have different characteristics (phase 236/228, lift 9/9 mm), but the cylinder heads are similar to those used on the M60. The valves, with an inlet diameter of 35 mm and an outlet diameter of 30.5 mm, were still outdated. The cylinder head cover is made of magnesium, and the plates and springs are lightened.

A new single-row timing chain with a resource of about 150–200 thousand kilometers has taken the place of the double-row chain. The intake manifold has been replaced, the throttle bodies are brand-new, and the ignition coils resemble those found in M52 engines. Additionally, a programmable thermostat was employed, and Bosch DME M5.2 was used in place of the engine management system.

Since 1998, the engine has undergone technical upgrades, including the addition of an electronic throttle valve, a VANOS variable valve timing system on the intake shaft, an intake manifold with smaller diameter channels, a Bosch DME M7.2 control system, and a new engine known as M62TUB44.

Other modifications of M62: M62B35, M62B46, M62B48.

Disadvantages of the M62B44 engine

Additionally, these engines feature a Nikasil coating that is wary of fuel sulfur;
The modest resource of a single-row timing chain is 150,000 km; VANOS provides the same;
A common cause of floating engine speeds is intake manifold air leaks;
In addition to having poor dependability and repairability, water-cooled generators have coolant and oil leaks from beneath the valve cover.
