The N47D16 engine features two overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, an all-aluminum crankcase with thermally bonded cast iron cylinder liners, a common injection system with a pressure range of 1600 to 2200 bar, solenoid injectors that inject fuel into the combustion chamber, and a turbocharger with two turbochargers.

There are two versions of the N47D16U1 engine. The F20 114d and F21 114d have the 95 horsepower modification installed. The F20 116d EDE and F21 116d EDE have the 116 horsepower modification installed.
The N47 family also includes: N47D20.

Disadvantages of the N47D16 engine
Distinctive noises coming from the engine’s rear: wear on the gas distribution system; issues with the intake manifold flaps, like the one in the M47; and piezoelectric injectors, which can last over 200,000 kilometers when used properly but are not recoverable.
