The D0834 engine produces 180 horsepower, or 132 kW and 700 Nm of torque. This power unit has a working volume of 4.6 liters (4580 cm3). At 1400 rpm, the maximum torque is 830 Nm.

The following models of the D0834 series 4-stroke in-line engine with water cooling system are offered:
- air-to-air aftercooling and turbocharged exhaust gas;
- air-to-air aftercooling and turbocharged exhaust gas with integrated waste gate.
The current version of this motor satisfies the requirements of Euro-5 environmental safety standards, while the previous version complied with Euro-3 standards. Its design neutralizes nitrogen oxides using the EGR exhaust gas recirculation system and the Common Rail direct fuel injection system.
High pressure radial piston distribution pumps with an EDC MS 6.4 control system are used in MAN D 0834 engines.

The EURO 3 requirements can be fully complied with thanks to the internal exhaust gas recirculation principle. Multi-jet direct injection into the combustion chamber, which readily travels to the center of the piston, is the engine’s operating principle. A comparatively wide usable speed range is provided by the motors’ design. As a result, the engine’s capacity to produce high torque over a broad speed range (high “elasticity”) improves.
Compared to the earlier 4/6-cylinder D08 series engines, these engines have the following modifications:
- Changes in the crankcase;
- Changes to the crankshaft;
- Changes to the camshaft;
- Swirl inlet, combustion chamber shape;
- Trapezoidal connecting rod;
- Changes to the steering box;
- Camshaft drive with straight high teeth;
- Changes to the cylinder head gasket;
- Changes in the ventilation system;
- Internal recirculation system;
- Changes in distribution phases;
- Lower exhaust gas temperature.
Explanation of marking D0834
| D | Fuel type – diesel |
| 08 | +100 = Cylinder diameter, mm = 108 mm |
| 3 | 3×10 + 100 corresponds approximately to a piston stroke in mm = 125 mm |
| 4 | Number of working cylinders |
