From 1987 to 1994, the company assembled the 1.5-liter 8-valve Mazda B5 engine in Japan and fitted it to the rear of the BF on a number of Familia model modifications, including the Etude coupe. There was a version with an injector in addition to the carburetor, but it was limited to Ford Festiva vehicles.

B1, B3, B3-ME, B5, B5-DE, B5-ME, B6, B6-ME, B6-DE, BP, and BP-ME are all members of the B-engine family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Mazda Etude BF in 1988 – 1989;
- Mazda Familia BF in 1987 – 1994.

Disadvantages of the Mazda B5 1.5l engine
This motor is very straightforward and dependable; all of its issues stem from aging;
Although the original carburetor is challenging to install, an analog is typically already available;
They frequently complain about low spark plug life and lubricant leaks on specialized forums;
Regulations state that the timing belt must be replaced every 60,000 kilometers, but when it breaks, the valves do not bend; hydraulic lifters can knock up to 100,000 kilometers and dislike low-quality oil.
