From 2002 to 2015, a plant in Japan produced the 1.5-liter Mazda ZY-VE engine, which was fitted to Verisa and the company’s most popular models with indexes 2 and 3. ZY-DE is a modified version of this motor that does not have an inlet phase regulator.

The Z-engine family also includes:
- 1.3 L – ZJ‑VE;
- 1.5 L – Z5‑DE, ZL‑DE, ZL‑VE, ZY‑VE;
- 1.6 L – Z6, ZM‑DE.

- Mazda 2 DY in 2002 – 2007;

Disadvantages of the Mazda ZY-VE engine
The unit’s propensity for accelerated carbon formation is its primary issue.
The engine will start to noticeably lose power by 100,000 kilometers if decarbonization is not done on a regular basis.
Floating speeds are primarily caused by EGR and throttle pollution.
Although the replacement is costly, the timing chain has a good resource.
Every 100,000 kilometers, the valve clearance is adjusted; hydraulic lifters are not used.
