Engine Mercedes OM636

The OM636 is a diesel engine with four cylinders and four strokes. In 1949, it was first introduced. Since the late 1940s, Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, vans, and small trucks have been equipped with this engine.

Because the bridge between the valves is too small and heat is not dissipated, the engine’s weak point is the thermal overload of the cylinder head. Water may enter the combustion chamber as a result of these tiny cracks.

The motor has a thermostat with a short circuit cable and is water-cooled. Gray cast iron makes up the engine block and cylinder head; OM 636.912 and OM 636.915 have two valve covers, while the other models only have one bore. Steel is used to forge the connecting rods and triple bearing crankshaft. The engine’s lower camshaft is powered by two gears and has two overhead valves per cylinder (OHV).

The camshaft drives the Bosch inline injection pump through an extra pair of gears. The prechambers are filled with fuel. The exhaust, camshaft, and injection pump are on the right, while the intake and front chambers are on the left. In contrast to model 636.930, which has an injection time, model 636.914 has no injection time and is controlled at the final speed. A belt from the crankshaft powers the pump, which is integrated into the cylinder head.
