Popular mid-size concern models like the 406, 407, 607, and 807 were equipped with the 2.2-liter Peugeot EW12J4 or 3FZ engine, which was manufactured in France between 1999 and 2009. This engine was modified to have a higher compression ratio (EW12E4 or 3FY).

The EW family of engines includes the EW7J4, EW7A, EW10J4, EW10D, EW10A, and EW12J4.
The engine was mounted on:
- Citroen C8 I (V3) in 2002 – 2005;
- Peugeot 406 I (D8/D9) in 2001 – 2004;
- Peugeot 407 I (D2) in 2003 – 2009;
- Peugeot 607 I (Z8/Z9) in 1999 – 2008;
- Peugeot 807 I (V2) in 2002 – 2005.

Disadvantages of the EW12J4 engine
The utilization of two balancer shafts makes this engine structurally complex;
Owners most frequently complain about oil leaks from oil seals and valve covers; ignition system issues and sensor glitches come in second; the phase regulator may knock at 50,000 km, hydraulic lifters at 100,000 km; and the power unit makes a lot of noise, especially when it’s idle.
