The engine produces less noise and its exhaust is less harmful. The engine’s crankshaft and camshaft are fitted with hydraulic dampers to reduce vibration and noise in order to meet noise regulations. Additionally, a small amount of fuel is injected prior to the main portion for even more noise absorption at idle engine speeds.

The Volvo D13K460 engine is compliant with Euro 6, which has cut particulate matter emissions by 50% and the allowable nitrogen oxide (NOX) content by 80% when compared to Euro 5. Volvo Trucks has created a muffler after-treatment system that includes an uncooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve, a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), and a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) with an ammonia catalytic converter (Ammonia Slip Catalyst, ASC) in order to comply with legal requirements.
