From 2009 to 2013, the company produced the Volvo D5204T 2.0-liter R5 diesel engine, which was installed on its compact models, including the C30, C70, S40, and V50 in D4 modifications. Similar but less potent versions of this diesel were available with the T2, T3, T5, and T7 indexes.

The D5244T, D5244T4, and D5244T15 are diesel modular engines.
The engine was mounted on:
- Volvo C30 I (533) in 2010 – 2013;
- Volvo C70 I (872) in 2009 – 2013;
- Volvo S40 II (544) in 2010 – 2012;
- Volvo V50 I (545) in 2010 – 2012.

Disadvantages of the D5204T engine
This contemporary CR diesel has diesel particulate filters and piezo injectors operating at 1800 bar;
Rapid throttle or EGR valve contamination is the most frequent issue;
Hydraulic lifters can lose up to 100,000 kilometers of run due to low-quality oils; injectors and a regulator valve in the rail are the most frequently problematic parts of the fuel system;
In the event that the ribbed belt breaks, it will be pulled beneath the timing belt.
