From 2001 to 2006, the company produced the 2.4-liter Volvo D5244T diesel engine, which was fitted to popular models like the S60, S80, V70, XC70, and XC90. This diesel engine is a member of the first generation of D5 power units, along with the D5244T2 engine.

The D5204T, D5244T4, and D5244T15 are diesel modular engines.
The engine was mounted on:
- Volvo S60 I (384) in 2001 – 2005;
- Volvo S80 I (184) in 2001 – 2006;
- Volvo V70 II (285) in 2002 – 2006;
- Volvo XC70 II (295) in 2002 – 2006;
- Volvo XC90 I (275) in 2002 – 2005.

Disadvantages of the D5244T engine
The biggest issue for owners is unreliable fuel injectors; the fuel system’s rail pressure regulator occasionally fails; hydraulic lifters cannot withstand low-quality oils and can already knock by 100,000 kilometers; this version is the most straightforward and dependable in the series; it lacks a particulate filter, swirl flaps, and turbine electric drive.
