From 2005 to 2010, the company produced the 2.4-liter Volvo D5244T4 diesel engine, which was fitted to numerous well-known company models, including the S60, S80, V70, XC60, XC70, and XC90. This engine was a member of the second generation of D5 engines, along with the T5, T7, T8, T13, and T18 diesel engines.

The D5204T, D5244T, and D5244T15 are diesel modular engines.
The engine was mounted on:
- Volvo S60 I (384) in 2005 – 2009;
- Volvo S80 I (184) in 2006 – 2009;
- Volvo V70 II (285) in 2005 – 2007; V70 III (135) in 2007 – 2009;
- Volvo XC60 I (156) in 2008 – 2009;
- Volvo XC70 II (295) in 2005 – 2007; XC70 III (136) in 2007 – 2009;
- Volvo XC90 I (275) in 2005 – 2010.

Disadvantages of the D5244T4 engine
These diesel engines frequently have jammed intake manifold swirl flaps;
The turbine actuator drive’s plastic gears deteriorate rapidly;
Bad oils cause hydraulic lifters to occasionally knock after 100,000 kilometers;
The engine may stop if the alternator belt breaks and falls beneath the timing belt;
Liners frequently burst and antifreeze combines with oil at high mileage.
