Engine Peugeot EW7J4

Several of the company’s popular mid-size models, such as the 406 and 407, were equipped with the 1.8-liter Peugeot EW7J4 or 6FZ engine, which was manufactured in France between 2000 and 2008. This power unit began to be replaced around 2006 by an upgraded EW7A engine.

The EW family of engines includes the EW7J4, EW7A, EW10J4, EW10D, EW10A, and EW12J4.

The engine was mounted on:

  • Peugeot 406 I (D8/D9) in 2001 – 2004;
  • Peugeot 407 I (D2) in 2004 – 2006;
  • Citroen C5 I (X3/X4) in 2004 – 2008;
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso I (N68) in 2000 – 2005.

Disadvantages of the EW7J4 engine

Lubricant leaks account for the majority of the power unit’s issues; oil frequently leaks from the breather, oozes from under the valve cover, or simply burns out.
Frequent ignition system component failures, particularly coil failures, rank second;
Contamination of the throttle or idle speed controller is the cause of the floating engine speed;
Engine mounts and hydraulic lifters frequently need to be replaced after 100,000 kilometers.
