From 2005 to 2017, a Chinese factory produced the 2.5-liter V6 Toyota 5GR-FE engine, which was limited to local versions of well-known models like the Crown and Reiz. Dual VVT-i type phase regulators and distributed fuel injection are features of this power unit.

The engine was mounted on:
- Toyota Crown 12 (S180) in 2005 – 2009; Crown 13 (S200) in 2009 – 2015;
- Toyota Reiz 1 (X120) in 2005 – 2010; Reiz 2 (X130) in 2010 – 2017.

Disadvantages of the 5GR-FE engine
The engine is frequently complimented on local forums, with the only complaints being grease leaks.
This is also the issue with the phase regulators crackling when the engine is started.
Monitoring the cooling system is crucial because any overheating can cause the gasket to break.
The units in this series have ignition coils and a water pump as weak points.
