Since 2014, the 1.3-liter Toyota 1NR-FKE engine has been assembled in Japan, primarily for the domestic automobile market. This engine features a high compression ratio, a variable valve timing system (VVT-iE), and an economical Atkinson cycle.

The engines in the NR family are 3NR-FE, 8NR-FTS, 1NR-FE, 1NR-VE, 1NR-FKE, 2NR-FE, 2NR-VE, and 2NR-FKE.
The engine was mounted on:
- Toyota Ractis NCP120 since 2014;
- Toyota Yaris XP130 since 2014;
- Subaru Trezia since 2014.

Disadvantages of the 1NR-FKE engine
The power unit has very strict requirements for fuel and engine oil quality.
A small oil burner and loud work are complaints from some owners;
The EGR valve causes soot to quickly overgrow the intake manifold;
Water pumps and ignition coils are comparatively small resources.
