Engine Toyota 22R

From 1981 until 1997, the 2.4-liter Toyota 22R carbureted engine was manufactured in Japan and fitted to the company’s well-known models, including the 4Runner, Hilux, and Land Cruiser J70. In 1990, this motor underwent a significant update that resulted in a power increase of over 10 horsepower.

The engines 22R-E and 22R-TE are also part of the R family.

  • Toyota Celica 3 (A60) in 1981 – 1985;
  • Toyota Corona 6 (T130) in 1981 – 1983;
  • Toyota Cressida 4 (X80) in 1990 – 1995;
  • Toyota Hilux 3 (N30) in 1981 – 1983; Hilux 4 (N50) in 1983 – 1988; Hilux 5 (N80) in 1988 – 1997;
  • Toyota Land Cruiser 70 (J70) in 1984 – 1989.

Disadvantages of the Toyota 22R engine

The carburetor’s competent setting is the primary challenge for the owners;
The distributor is more concerned about ignition system issues than anything else.
The timing chain frequently stretches and begins to make noise during a run of 150–200 thousand kilometers;
There are no hydraulic lifters in this motor, and the valve clearances need to be adjusted on a regular basis. Other than that, it is a very dependable motor with a resource of roughly half a million kilometers.
