Since 2004, factories in Indonesia and Japan have been assembling the 2.7-liter Toyota 2TR-FE engine for large pickups and SUVs. A more recent Dual VVT-i system was installed on two shafts in 2015, replacing the motor’s original VVT-i phase regulator at the intake.

The 1TR-FE engine is another member of the TR family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Toyota 4Runner N280 since 2009;
- Toyota Fortuner AN60 in 2004 – 2015; Fortuner AN160 since 2015;
- Toyota HiAce H200 since 2004;
- Toyota Hilux AN30 in 2004 – 2015; Hilux AN130 since 2015;
- Toyota Innova AN40 in 2004 – 2015; Innova AN140 since 2015;
- Toyota Land Cruiser Prado J120 in 2004 – 2009; Land Cruiser Prado J150 since 2009.

Disadvantages of the 2TR-FE engine

The engine was installed on: The Toyota 2TR engine is incredibly stable and dependable, just like its predecessor. The crankshaft front oil seal is the only weak point, particularly on models manufactured prior to 2008. It leaks from time to time. A more contemporary copy must be used in its place. In cold weather, engines sometimes start to vibrate. The automatic transmission is the cause. The oil in it needs to be changed. The unit’s lifespan can be increased to the greatest extent feasible with regular maintenance, filling with the manufacturer’s recommended oil, and refueling only with premium gasoline.
