Since 2015, only the company’s Japanese plant has been producing the 1.2-liter Toyota 8NR-FTS engine. This engine has direct fuel injection, turbocharging with an intercooler, and variable valve timing systems VVT-i + VVT-iW. It runs on the Atkinson cycle.

The engines in the NR family are 3NR-FE, 8NR-FTS, 1NR-FE, 1NR-VE, 1NR-FKE, 2NR-FE, 2NR-VE, and 2NR-FKE.
The engine was mounted on:
- Toyota Auris 2 (E180) since 2015;
- Toyota C-HR 1 (AX10) since 2016.

Disadvantages of the 8NR-FTS engine
Progressive oil combustion from the first kilometers is a complaint raised by several owners;
Extraneous noises are frequently heard during motor operation, particularly from VVT-i clutches; the EGR valve gets dirty easily and may require cleaning at 30,000 kilometers.
