Between 1997 and 2009, the 1.6-liter Toyota 3ZZ-FE engine was manufactured in the US and at the company’s Japanese facility. Models with front-wheel drive, like the Corolla and Avensis, had the engine installed. Only in 2000 did the unit receive a variable valve timing system at the VVT-i inlet.

The engines in the ZZ family are 1ZZ-FE, 1ZZ-FED, 2ZZ-GE, 3ZZ-FE, and 4ZZ-FE.
The engine was mounted on:
- Toyota Avensis 1 (T220) in 1997 – 2002; Avensis 2 (T250) in 2003 – 2009;
- Toyota Corolla 8 (E110) in 1999 – 2002; Corolla 9 (E120) in 2000 – 2006; Corolla 10 (E150) in 2006 – 2009.

Frequent problems
- excessive use of oil. The oil scraper rings are the source of the issue, which is prevalent on models manufactured before 2002. Decarbonization is practically ineffective.
- The motor is making unnecessary knocks and noises. After 150,000 kilometers, the timing chain usually loosens. Replacement is necessary. Failure of the tensioner drive is another possibility. Replacement and diagnostics are necessary. Almost never do valves knock.
- Turnovers fluctuated. The valve system and the throttle-damper module must be flushed at idle speed.
vibration. The motor’s rear cushion is probably to blame; if not, this is a characteristic of the motor in this series.
We can add 3ZZ’s poor tolerance for overheating to the aforementioned drawbacks. The cylinder block always has a curvature at the end, after which they only need to be altered. The official manufacturer does not accept sleeves or boring. The unit has an average service life of 200 thousand kilometers. The ZZ series is generally regarded as not being very prestigious. Models made after 2005, however, are still very suitable for trouble-free operation.
