Produced from 1990 to 1996, the Mazda BP-ME or B8 1.8-liter gasoline engine was fitted to the 323 series, Familia, and Protege models in BG and BH bodies prior to restyling. Many reference books use different names for this unit, such as B8-ME or BP-SOHC.

B1, B3, B3-ME, B5, B5-DE, B5-ME, B6, B6-ME, B6-DE, BP, and BP-ME are all members of the B-engine family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Mazda 323 BG in 1990 – 1994;
- Mazda 323 BH in 1994 – 1996;
- Mazda Familia BG in 1990 – 1994;
- Mazda Familia BH in 1994 – 1996;
- Mazda Protege BG in 1990 – 1994;
- Mazda Protege BH in 1994 – 1996.

Disadvantages of the Mazda BP-ME engine
The engine’s idle speed frequently floats due to throttle valve contamination; low-quality oil can cause hydraulic lifters to knock up to 50,000 kilometers; this motor is renowned for its dependability and only causes problems at high mileage;
The timing belt is supposed to change every 60,000 kilometers, but when it breaks, the valves don’t bend; after 200,000 kilometers, oil scraper rings frequently lie and lubricant consumption starts to show.
