Since its debut at the 2014 auto show, the Mazda S5-DPTS or Skyactiv-D 1.5-liter diesel engine has been found in the CX-3 crossover and the most compact Demio or Mazda 2 model. This diesel engine has been modified to use the i-ELOOP recovery system under the S5-DPTR index.

The S8-DPTS and S8-VPTS internal combustion engines are also part of the Skyactiv-D family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Mazda 2 DJ since 2014;
- Mazda 3 BM in 2014 – 2018;
- Mazda CX-3 DK in 2015 – 2018.

Disadvantages of the S5-DPTS engine
A recall campaign was launched in response to oil entering the intake at high speeds;
The majority of issues discussed on specialized forums are related to the particulate filter’s unpredictability;
This engine’s oil level may increase significantly while the particulate filter is burning;
The oil will thin out if you burn too frequently, endangering the engine;
Owners also express dissatisfaction over fuel consumption that fluctuates greatly.
