The Japanese company has been manufacturing the 1.3-liter Mitsubishi 4A90 gasoline engine since 2004. They gave it to the Chinese in 2012 after installing it on the sixth generation Colt Smart Forfour. This power unit was created in collaboration with the renowned Daimler-Chrysler corporation.

The 4A91 and 4A92 engines are also part of the 4A9 family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Mitsubishi Colt Z30 in 2004 – 2013;
- Smart Forfour in 2004 – 2006;
- Haima 2 Qiubite in 2011 – 2015;
- Zotye Z200 in 2008 – 2016.
