The popular Passat B5, as well as the Audi A4 B5, A6 C5, and A8 D2 models, were equipped with the 2.5-liter Volkswagen AKN 2.5 TDI diesel engine, which was manufactured between 1999 and 2003. In essence, this power unit is an upgraded EURO 3 version of the popular AFB engine.

AFB, AKE, AKN, AYM, BAU, BDG, and BDH are additional models in the EA330 series.

Disadvantages of the VW AKN engine
The majority of complaints are about the camshaft cams or rockers wearing out quickly;
The Bosch VP44 electronically controlled high-pressure fuel pump frequently fails, which results in numerous issues;
Additionally, this motor is very vulnerable to oil leaks at the joints and under the valve cover; the mechanism for altering the turbine’s geometry may wedge after more than 150,000 kilometers of operation;
The engine’s viscous coupling bearing and pressure-reducing valves are also weak points.
