Modern turbocharger and heat exchanger designs, among other cutting-edge technologies, enable the Volvo D16A 520 engines to use less fuel and engine oil while also requiring less time and money for maintenance. Higher fuel efficiency is achieved through extremely accurate control of the injection algorithm, air flow, and combustion process.
Production of the D16A520 six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with direct injection and water cooling started in August 1993. Commercial heavy transport vehicles were equipped with these units. 520 horsepower from a 16122 cc engine is 50 horsepower more than that of its predecessor. The overhead camshaft, injection system, and cylinder block of the D16A520 are sturdy and dependable. Each cylinder has four valves, for a total of twenty-four valves.

optimized cylinder block with ideal load distribution without needless weighting; replaceable wet cylinder liners; piston cooling system; tapered connecting rods to lower the risk of piston damage; induction hardening of the journal of the main and connecting rod bearings of the crankshaft; nitriding the cogwheel surfaces of the camshaft gears for extended service life; compression piston rings to lower engine oil loss; viscous type crankshaft vibration damper; replaceable valve seats and guides; top camshaft.
Cooling system: effective cooling with clever coolant flow control; thermostat with low water resistance.
Using a turbocharger: extra oil filter for the turbocharger lube line; a very dependable and efficient turbocharger.
