Since 1997, only Japan has produced the 1.5-liter Toyota 1NZ-FXE engine. Initially, it was limited to the Prius, but it eventually extended to other hybrid models. The motor has an ETCS-i electronic throttle and a VVT-i phase regulator on the intake shaft.

The 1NZ-FE and 2NZ-FE engines are also part of the NZ family.
The engine was mounted on:
- Toyota Corolla E160 since 2012;
- Toyota Prius 1 (XW10) in 1997 – 2003; Prius 2 (XW20) in 2003 – 2009; Prius C 1 (NHP10) since 2011;
- Toyota Sienta 2 (XP170) since 2015;
- Toyota Yaris 3 (XP130) since 2012.

Disadvantages of the 1NZ-FXE engine
The engine gradually starts to use oil at very high mileage;
Oil leaks are common, particularly from the rear crankshaft oil seal; the hydraulic tensioner frequently fails after 150,000 kilometers and the timing chain is pulled; carbon deposits in the intake and on the throttle are typically the cause of the floating engine speed.
