Engine YaMZ-534

The Yaroslavl Motor Plant produces the YaMZ-534 engine, a new family of L-shaped, four-cylinder diesel engines. The YaMZ-534 series was created from the ground up. This engine, which is classified as a medium in-line diesel engine, powers trucks, dump trucks, chassis, tractors with wheel arrangements of 4×2, 4×4, 6×2, 6×4, and GVW up to 12t, as well as road trains up to 21t.

Compression ignition, direct injection, liquid cooling, and turbocharging are features of the four-stroke in-line diesel YaMZ-534 engine. The following characteristics set YaMZ 534 apart:

  • adherence to contemporary environmental standards “Euro-4”;
  • the use of a contemporary direct injection system utilizing the Common Rail fuel system;
  • and the existence of an electronic control unit.

In 2012, a line of YaMZ-534 engines went into production. A cast-iron in-line cylinder block with cast-iron wet liners and oil nozzles is present. The piston stroke of the crankshaft with 88 mm journals and 76 mm crank journals is 128 mm. Consequently, our working volume is 4.4 liters. A head with four valves per cylinder covers the motor. 36/34 mm is the valve’s inlet and outlet sizes.

Each of the four cylinders in the YaMZ-534 engine’s row-vertically arranged combustion chamber has a working volume of 1018 cm³. There is a camshaft in the block and a lower shaft motor. Otto engines operate on a four-stroke principle, with the cylinders operating in the following order: 1-3-4-2. Gray cast iron is used to make the cylinder block. The cylinders share a single cylinder head and are arranged in a single row.

A “floating type” pin with two retaining rings is used to attach the cylinder-piston group, which consists of an aluminum-silicon alloy (silumin) piston and a “wet-type” cast-iron sleeve, to a double-T-section connecting rod made of cast iron with a unique bronze insert. Through bushings (bronze plain bearings), the other side of the connecting rod is fastened to the crankshaft connecting rod journal by two bolts.

Nitrogen-hardened journals, five pivot points, and counterweights are forged into the crankshaft. The camshaft is powered by a gear. The block and flywheel housing are cast independently. The engine is started by a steel flywheel with a distinct gear rim. The YaMZ-534 engine is equipped with a water cooling system and a mixed-type oil lubrication system that uses both spray and under pressure. The water and oil coolers are installed independently of the engine.

The engine comes with a 1 or 2 kW generator and an integrated oil cooler. Both the front and rear of the engine have hydraulic gear pumps. Additionally, a 200 l/min pneumatic brake compressor is integrated into the motor. An electrically and manually operated emergency stop valve for the engine is installed in the intake manifold. For the installation of gearboxes made in Russia and other countries, the crankcase and flywheel are designed in a number of different ways.

This engine has undergone additional modifications:

  • YaMZ-534-01: apparatus for air conditioning compressor installation;
  • YaMZ-534-02: full set with fan;
  • YaMZ-534-03 is a complete set for installing an air conditioning compressor that includes a fan.

These 4-cylinder diesel engine modifications are all turbocharged, have the same volume (4.43 liters), and range in power from 136 to 215 horsepower. They are all maximally unified with one another. In addition, the manufacturer states that the minimum specific fuel consumption indicator is 145 g/hp*h. According to the most recent fuel efficiency guidelines, this figure is also a very good indicator by today’s standards.

The YaMZ-534 diesel engine has a charge air cooler installed directly on the product that uses the power unit in addition to turbocharging. Bosch common rail fuel equipment provides the extra energy of injection into the combustion chamber.

YaMZ-534 engines’ electronic control unit is outfitted with contemporary safeguards against: exceeding the coolant’s maximum speed and temperature; lowering the oil line’s minimum allowable pressure. The engine is automatically stopped in the event of an emergency.

Features of operation and malfunction of YaMZ-534

The YaMZ-534 engine will run as effectively as possible. A universal battery-type fuel system is used to accomplish this. Additionally, it has a control unit that provides the precise amount of fuel to the system based on the vehicle’s requirements, enabling you to increase efficiency and minimize fuel consumption at maximum power.

Regarding malfunctions, you should keep an eye on the USR’s condition, where carbon deposits build up and the valve wedges. Regular cleaning or plugging the EGR and flashing the ECU to enable operation without this valve are the two solutions to this issue.

The motor may also use up oil. Because the valve guides may wear out and allow oil to pass through them, it is necessary to check them in this situation. About 250–300 thousand kilometers are served by the turbine. Controlling its condition is necessary for this run in order to prevent additional expenses from being incurred by the dead turbine. Installing an analog is advised in case the turbocharger fails. Turbine failures have been reported up to 50,000 kilometers away.
